Lifting Magnet Systems, below-the-hook lifting equipment

Electro-permanent lifting magnets are a type of industrial lifting magnet made from steel parts, coils, magnetic materials, and an electric control device. This hybrid has permanent lifting magnets that can be turned ‘off and on’ with electricity.  They are quite efficient in handling heavy materials but they, like all magnets, have their own benefits and disadvantages. Understanding the working principles of electro-permanent magnets can help you make a more informed decision on the best lifting magnet for your operation.

Power Sources

The electricity that powers the magnets comes from two power sources. One source is from high intrinsic coercive force (Hci) magnets and the other source is from low Hci magnets. The Low Hci magnets are wrapped in coils that electricity passes through. The ‘on/off’ switch of the magnets changes the direction of the electric pulse. Once the direction of the current pulse in the coils changes direction, the magnetism changes direction as well. When the direction of magnetism of both magnets is going in the same direction, the magnet is ‘on.’ When they are in opposite directions, they absorb each other’s magnetism and the magnet is ‘off.’ This is all controlled by an electric remote control device.

Advantages of The Electro-Permanent Lifting Magnet

Unsurprisingly, the ability to turn an electro-permanent magnet on and off brings with it many advantages. One is how the magnets only use electricity for a few moments when the magnetism is switched on and off. Once the magnet is on, no more electricity is required, making it an economic and eco-friendly option.

Since electricity is only used to switch the magnets’ current, they will keep working in the event of a power failure. This is not only convenient but increases the safety of your workplace. Another advantage is how the electro-permanent magnets can be controlled from a distance with a remote control or even controlled by automated process systems. Automated process systems allow for highly efficient assembly lines that save time and improve your bottom line.

It’s also important to note that electro-permanent magnets can not only be turned on and off but can also have their strength adjusted to match any lifting capacity. This is very useful when moving sheets of metal one at a time. The magnetism can be controlled so any metal sheets below the one being lifted remain in place.

Disadvantages of Electro-Permanent Lifting Magnets

One issue with electro-permanent magnets is that their magnetic flux is drastically weakened by air gaps between the magnet and the load. Magnetic flux is a measurement of the total magnetic field which passes through a given area. The electro-permanent lifting magnet is best used on loads with a smooth, even surface but they may struggle with rough and uneven loads.
